Welcome to The Hayling Island Bookshop

The Hayling Island Bookshop is one of the last remaining independent bookshops in the area and has gained a reputation for the quality of personal service and their innovative Author signing events.Authors we have run or supported events for include Terry Pratchett,Jacqueline Wilson, Anne Widdecombe, Ian Whybrow, Kate Mosse, Derek Landy, Chris Ryan, Darren Shan, Louis de Bernieres, Sandi Toksvig, Julian Fellowes and Sir Andrew Motion.

We also provide bookselling services at author events run by Portsmouth School Library Service and both Portsmouth and Hampshire Library Services. In addition the Bookshop also ran the children's and Hayling events for the 2008 and 2009 Havant Literary Festivals and was the Official Bookseller to the 2010 Portsmouth Festivities.

In 2009 The Hayling Island Bookshop was named as South of England Independent Bookshop of the year.

Bookshop proprietor Marie Telford is a member of the Advisory Panel for the Independent Booksellers Forum within the Booksellers Association and, with her husband Colin, regularly meets with other independent booksellers to share experiences on how to keep small bookshops alive and well in the UK. They are also active in the local community using their event management experience to sponsor and organise the Hayling Island Scarecrow Festivals in 2007,2008 and 2009. Over 4500 visitors and residents took part in the 2009 Scarecrow Festival.

The Hayling Island Bookshop was again the main sponsor for The Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival in 2010.

Portsmouth Bookfest has been announced and will run from October 25th to November 13th. It's being organised by The Hayling Island Bookshop in partnership with Portsmouth City Council Libraries and Cultural Services. The Festival will be headlined by Jacqueline Wilson, Josephine Cox, Louise Rennison and Chris Ryan and will also feature a special Crime and the City event which teams up crime writers Simon Brett, Peter Lovesey, Graham Hurley, June Hampson and Pauline Rowson with Police and University forensic specialists and Crime Scene Advisors in a panel discussion. This is very much CSI Portsmouth territory and audience members will be able to have their fingerprints taken by the police specialist unit - on a strictly voluntary basis. Other authors appearing will include Carole Matthews, Isabel Ashdown, Paul Stickland, Ian Whybrow, Tom Palmer, Guy Bass, Emily Gravett as well as the touring version of Scott Pack and Marie Phillip’s Firestation BookSwop with guests Mick Jackson and Charlotte Moore.

September Events.

September 30th.Award winning journalist and best selling author Tim Butcher will discuss his new book Chasing The Devil the story of his 350 mile trek through Sierra Leone and Liberia out in hardback in September. His first book Chasing The Deviltopped The Times best seller list in 2008.The event will be held at the URC Church, North Street, Havant at 7.30pm.

October 25th for three weeks Portsmouth BookFest.
